What should a 21st century reporter's notebook include?
With the right tech, could we supercharge the reporting process to find and tell important stories that would otherwise have gone unnoticed?
Maybe members of the Hacks/Hackers community are different, but by and large, reporters are not early, eager adopters of new technology. Other parts of journalism, like production and distribution, are heavy with technology and have a wide range of mature, easy-to-use tools. When doing reporting we tend to rely on a relatively generic and limited set of tools to get the job done.
So what’s stopping reporters from finding and experimenting with new technology and incorporating it into their kit?
And what could a modern reporter’s notebook do? With the right tech, could we supercharge the reporting process to find and tell important stories that would otherwise have gone unnoticed?
This was the focus of my work at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism - but I’m sure you’ve got some ideas too, so let’s talk about them!
